Our Approach

A typical Jansons forward funded deal. The site was bought, subject to planning from East Durham College. Once contracts were exchanged with the vendor, Jansons put together a very comprehensive application to construct a new building within the green belt, using their specialist knowledge of “special circumstances”.

Once planning was approved, Jansons entered into negotiations with student housing group Unite who would ultimately purchase the site from the College with a back to back agreement with Jansons to build out. This agreement took 11 working days from receipt of Unite’s Board approval.

The Development

Jansons secured planning permission for a 222 bedroom student housing scheme, part conversion but predominantly new build.  The site itself sits within the green belt opposite the University of Durham’s Maiden Castle sports complex and sits immediately adjacent to this functioning agricultural college.

Significant work went into ensuring that the scheme would not interfere with the future running of the college and during construction, not one complaint was received.

The scheme opened on time and on budget in July 2018.
